Chair Making Intensive

The last 2-weeks of July will be Philadelphia Furniture Workshop's Chair Making Intensive. This course explores the essentials of chair making including various design processes and construction techniques needed to make a fine, hand-made chair. Participants will engage in thorough design techniques such as sketching, making mock ups and helpful ways of evaluating design decisions. Students then begin construction of their individual chairs, learning traditional joinery techniques, working with curves using bent laminations and steam bending, seat-frame construction and basic upholstery skills as needed for their design. The goal is to make the process of designing and building a chair less intimidating, empowering students to take on future projects with confidence and skill. These versatile design and woodworking skills can be applied to future woodworking projects, helping to take a lot of the mystery out of the question - “how do I begin”. Class is held Monday - Friday of both weeks. Here is the full course description on Philadelphia Furniture Workshop's website. Instructor - Craig Stevens
